Frequently Asked Questions

Scheduling & Payment

How can I schedule an appointment?
The most convenient option for scheduling is the online scheduler, but you may also call or text (708) 665-5083 or send an email message via the "Contact" form.  Credit card verification is required at time of scheduling.

Do you take walk-in appointments?
No, I'm unable to accommodate walk-in appointments.  However, I may be able to schedule a same-day appointment for you, depending on that day's schedule.

When are you available?
Currently, I'm available Monday through Saturday, by appointment only, in-studio only.  My first appointment time is 9AM.  The last time slots of the day are 6:30PM Monday-Friday and 3:00PM Saturday.  My schedule can fill quickly so advance scheduling is recommended.

When should I arrive?   Is it a problem if I'm a bit early or slightly late?
To insure you have the complete, unrushed session you deserve, I encourage existing clients to arrive about 5-7 minutes before the scheduled appointment time.  If you're a new client, you should arrive 10-15 minutes early to allow time for a short intake discussion.  Any earlier may be earlier than I can accommodate due to other client appointments.

Try to avoid being late.  If you do arrive late, you're still welcome to the session, but you'll be limited to the time remaining and would be required to pay the full session fee.  Keep in mind I'm unable to extend a session past its usual end time for anyone who arrives late.

I need to cancel my appointment.  What do I do?
If you scheduled your appointment using the online scheduler, you're easiest option to change or cancel is to return to the scheduler again and login.  You may also use the "Change/Cancel Appointment' button at the bottom of your original confirmation email.

Please try to affect any appointment changes at least 24 hours prior to your originally scheduled appointment time.  If you need to cancel less than 24 hours before your scheduled appointment, please contact me as soon as possible by phone, email, or text.  Note that appointments canceled with less than 24 hours notice are subject to a cancelation fee. *See Terms and Conditions below regarding cancelation policy and cancelation fees.

What forms of payment do you accept?
I accept cash, credit card (VISA, Mastercard, AMEX, Discover), Apple Pay, Google Wallet, Zelle, and Venmo. I'm unable to accept personal checks.  Payment is accepted at the conclusion of the session.  *See Terms and Conditions below for a detailed explanation of payment policy.

Is a tip expected?
In the United States, tipping massage therapists is a conventional practice, the same as one might tip a waiter or waitress in a restaurant.  It's never a requirement, but it's always appreciated.  A typical gratuity is 15% - 20% of the price of the service.

Can you bill my insurance for a massage therapy session?
No, I'm unable to bill insurance for payment for the session.  However, I'd be happy to issue a receipt you can use to submit your own claim to your insurance provider.  (Note:  even with a receipt, you can only be reimbursed by your insurance provider if your health insurance benefits include massage therapy.  Be sure to check with your insurance provider to confirm coverage details.)

During a Massage Therapy Session

Do I need to completely undress for the massage?
Most table-based massage and bodywork techniques are traditionally performed with the client unclothed.  However, it's entirely up to you what you want to wear. You should undress to your level of comfort. Please be sure to remove any and all jewelry, particularly necklaces.  You'll be properly draped with a cover sheet during the entire session.

When you arrive, I will show you to the massage room and then leave the room to give you time to undress and relax upon the table.  I will return within a couple of minutes, knock on the door, and wait for you to acknowledge before I enter to begin your massage.

Will I be covered during the session?
Yes, you will be properly draped at all times to keep you warm and comfortable. Only areas being worked on will be temporarily undraped during the session.

What does the massage feel like?
My technique is normally a blended style largely built upon deep tissue and Swedish modalities with elements from other forms incorporated.  Since every client is different, my approach may vary, but in general, sessions begin with lighter pressure and longer, flowing movements to warm up your tissues, help calm the nervous system, and allow you and your muscles to relax.  I typically follow that with deeper work and other bodywork protocols, depending on your needs.  I use a natural unscented massage oil to facilitate smooth movement without causing excessive friction on the skin.  I often wrap up a session with a few hot towels for hands and feet, to soothe and remove any excess oil.

Is it okay to talk during the massage?
I have found clients' conversation preferences run the gamut:  some clients enjoy asking questions and making small talk during a session while others prefer complete silence.  I generally recommend that clients take the opportunity to give their mind a break as well as their body by embracing the quiet atmosphere and not worrying too much about conversation.  That said, if a little conversation provides you a more comforting or relaxing experience, I'm not opposed to it.

I do encourage you to communicate anything that may be limiting your comfort during a session. For example, if the room feels too hot or too cold or if you urgently need a bathroom break or if the pressure or technique I'm applying feels too intense, please let me know.  No client should have to suffer in silence.

May I take text messages and phone calls during the massage?
You deserve the best massage therapy treatment possible, uninterrupted.  So to maximize your session time, I would ask you silence or turn off your phone, disconnect from the always-on world for the duration of the session, and focus on your wellbeing.  If you have a particular day or timeframe that requires you to have your phone turned on and nearby, I suggest avoiding scheduling your appointment for that timeframe.  Instead, try to schedule for a time when you aren't expecting an urgent or pending call.

Illnesses, Injuries, & Your Safety

Is massage safe?  Are there any medical conditions for which massage therapy is not appropriate?
Yes, massage therapy is a safe, low-risk form of treatment for a wide variety of physical and mental ailments.

That said, yes, there are some medical conditions for which massage is inappropriate, what we call "contraindications".  For that reason, upon your first session, I will ask you an array of general health questions.  It is very important for you to inform me of your current medical conditions and any medications you may be taking.  Any information you provide me is always kept confidential. Bear in mind that I am obligated to refuse treatment for anyone who exhibits absolute contraindications and will need to modify treatment to avoid any locally contraindicated conditions.

The majority of individuals who come for massage typically have no contraindications and can receive massage as normal.

Will massage help for chronic pain?
Massage therapy is a great option for many conditions that involve ongoing pain.  Arthritis, generalized low back pain, and fibromyalgia are a few examples.  Be sure to provide me with all the necessary details of your condition so I can develop a safe, appropriate treatment regimen for you.

I've just injured myself, and I'm in severe pain.  Can I get a massage?
No.  While massage therapy is typically beneficial for pain mitigation and recovery from injury, it is contraindicated for the acute phase of injury, i.e. within the first 24 hours or so after the injury and/or while inflammation and pain is extreme.  You should see a physician if your injury is severe and does not improve within a short time.  Scheduling a massage during the post-acute phase may be fine, assuming your pain is no longer severe and your doctor has not advised otherwise.

I was sick earlier this week, but I feel better now.  Can I get a massage?
No.  For the safety of others and my safety, I'm unable to provide a massage if you are contagious, regardless of whether the pathogen is COVID-19, the common cold, the flu, or some other infection.  This includes rashes and skin infections.  If you have had an infection recently, you should wait at least 2 weeks from the date of your last symptoms before scheduling your massage appointment.  If you arrive for a session and you are a contagion risk, I will need to turn you away and ask you to reschedule.

If I visit your studio for a session, am I safe from COVID-19?
If you have any concerns, questions, or comments regarding COVID-19 as it relates to my studio space or wellness treatment in general, please feel free to contact me to discuss them. I have been fully vaccinated. My studio is fully sanitized between sessions, and I will continue to maintain an environment that helps ensure safety:  pre-session temperature checks, HEPA air filtration, updated protocols, etc. It's also important to keep in mind that COVID-19 still exists, and there are still risks. Before making an appointment for any type of wellness services, be sure to carefully consider those risks.

You will not be required to wear a mask. However, for your safety and the safety of other clients, it is requested you wear one if you are not fully vaccinated. I am fully vaccinated and no longer wear a mask, but I am happy to wear one at your request.

Please avoid scheduling if you are not feeling well.  If you arrive for a session and you are contagious, running a temperature, or otherwise symptomatic, I will need to turn you away and ask you to reschedule.

Is your location safe?
Yes, my studio is located in a secure multi-level commercial building.  It is private and quiet.

I continually endeavor to keep my studio a safe, welcoming, comfortable space for all clients to receive the best possible treatment, regardless of age, race, body shape, physical disability, gender identity, or sexual orientation.

Location

Where is your studio located?
My practice is located in downtown Oak Park, Illinois at 1100 Lake Street, in a quiet and secure multi-level commercial building (the Shaker Building.)  Close to several modes of public transportation with shopping and other services nearby, it is a convenient location for massage for Oak Park residents, as well as for the neighboring communities of River Forest, Forest Park, Elmwood Park, and Chicago.

Where does the actual session happen?
All sessions take place in a warm, comfortable, private room with gentle lighting and soft music. Massage, bodywork, and passive stretching are conducted on a traditional massage table covered with clean linens.  Meditation sessions are typically seated using zabuton cushions. Bathrooms are located just outside the suite.

Is parking available?
Yes.  The building is connected to the multi-story Holley Court Parking Garage, which offers free parking for the first 60 minutes. After the first hour, rates are reasonable with the next 90 minutes at only $2.00.  Metered street parking may also be available on Lake Street and free street parking on some nearby streets.

I don't drive.  What are my transportation options?
The building is located two blocks north of the CTA Green Line Harlem/Lake station and the Metra UP-W Line Oak Park station.  PACE suburban buses also have regular routes servicing Lake Street and Harlem Avenue.
